Women’s Prisons in the U.S.
Due to the decentralized nature of our criminal justice system, there is no existing, easy-to-find, complete list of active women’s prisons in the U.S. The list I have compiled below is based on information from the Federal Bureau of Prisons as well as the state Department of Corrections agencies. Prisons are labelled as Federal or State and are linked to their websites or page on the state corrections site where possible. Note: D.C. has not run its own prison system since 2001, when it was taken over by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
You can also use *this list*, compiled by the Advocacy and Research on Reproductive Wellness of Incarcerated People (ARRWIP) group at Johns Hopkins University through their Pregnancy in Prison Statistics study. Note: Their list is more extensive than mine in terms of what facilities are listed and including many prisons which house men and women that was unaware of. I will update my list to include all facilities which house women as soon as I have the time!
